Export of raspberries from Ukraine, primarily frozen, will grow rapidly over the next 5 years. At the same time, the preference in supplying this berry to foreign markets will be large producers and cooperatives that will be able to provide sufficient volumes, certification and product traceability. This forecast was voiced by the President of the Ukrainian Fruit and Vegetable Association (UPOA) Taras Bashtannik during the conference "Berry and Processing: Technologies and Innovations", which is taking place today in Lviv.
The UPOA President, during his speech to the conference participants, named the priority export markets for Ukrainian raspberries, including the countries of the EU, the Middle East and Asia.
Speaking about the attractiveness of the export direction of Ukrainian raspberries, Taras Bashtannik gave a comparative description of the prices for berries this season. So, Ukrainian berry farmers sold fresh raspberries from the field in wholesale markets at an average price of 55 UAH / kg, berries for processing cost in the range of 47-52 UAH / kg, but raspberries for sale in foreign markets in September-October had a price of 63- 65 UAH / kg.
Taras Bashtannik also noted that against this background, there will be no significant growth in consumption of berries in the domestic market over the next 5 years, and in the absence of force majeure, market prices for raspberries will no longer be too volatile.
The specialist of the Ukrainian berry market also noted that before creating a berry, a farmer should ask himself three key questions if he wants to profit from this business in the future. “Who are we focusing on? Where is the field? What do we have at the field? It is to these questions that the agrarian should know the answers before planting an income berry plant, ”noted the UPAA President.
He also added that one of the most crucial questions is the choice of raspberry varieties.
“We will not advertise or criticize any varieties. However, it is necessary to clearly understand the requirements for the variety based on growing technologies, soil climatic conditions and product sales markets.
Today, Ukrainian berry farms do not have pronounced varieties, growing mainly remontant berries. However, among the common varieties in Poland are Polka and Polana, and in Serbia, which is one of the leaders in the world raspberry market, Vilamet and Tulamin, - said Taras Bashtannik.
The UPOA President also noted the growing interest in raspberries in the global berry market. Confirmation of this, according to Taras melon growers, is the growth of world areas under this berry from 92.6 thousand hectares in 2013 to 124.9 thousand hectares based on the results of 2018.
